EU Welcomes New UNAMA Chief Rabab Fatima and Pledges Continued Cooperation

The European Union has warmly welcomed the appointment of Rabab Fatima, a seasoned Bangladeshi diplomat, as the new UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

Kabul 24: Fatima succeeds Roza Otunbayeva, and the EU has expressed its readiness to work closely with her both in Kabul and within international forums, particularly in advancing the next phases of the Doha Process.

Anouar El Anouni, the EU foreign affairs spokesperson, stressed that the international community must not forget Afghanistan. He underlined that sustained global engagement remains crucial for addressing the multifaceted challenges facing the country.

The EU views Fatima’s appointment as an opportunity to strengthen coordinated international efforts aimed at supporting stability and humanitarian needs in Afghanistan.

Political analyst Moeen Gul Samkani described the selection of an experienced female diplomat as a positive development. “The appointment of a capable woman to lead UNAMA could significantly enhance engagement with Afghanistan,” he said. “It will help ensure that the country’s ground realities are more effectively communicated to the UN Security Council, ultimately benefiting the Afghan people.”The EU’s position comes in the wake of former Iraqi President Barham Salih’s recent visit to Afghanistan.

Following the visit, the EU ambassador held discussions with him to review the latest developments.

European officials described the context of these meetings as occurring amid one of the world’s largest and most complex humanitarian crises, marked by widespread food insecurity, economic hardship, and displacement.

The European Union reaffirmed its strong commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to the Afghan population. It also reiterated its dedication to supporting the rights of Afghan women and girls, emphasizing that gender equality and inclusive policies must remain central to international engagement.

Political analyst Hematullah Ahmadi highlighted the constructive role the EU can play. “The European Union is well-positioned to deliver effective humanitarian aid, address the needs of returnees, support the health sector, and assist communities affected by natural disasters,” he noted.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres formally appointed Rabab Fatima last Thursday. Her selection is seen as a strategic move to maintain high-level international attention on Afghanistan during a critical period.

Analysts believe that a strong and experienced UNAMA leadership can help bridge gaps between the international community and Afghan authorities while ensuring that humanitarian programs reach those most in need.

Overall, the EU’s response signals continuity in its Afghanistan policy — balancing humanitarian support with diplomatic engagement.

As the Doha Process continues, the bloc hopes Fatima’s tenure will open new avenues for constructive dialogue and tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Afghans.
