Islamic Emirate and EU Discuss Reactivating Afghanistan’s WTO Membership

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan announced that Ahmadullah Zahed, the Deputy Minister, held a meeting with Veronika Boshkovich Pohar, the European Union’s Chargé d’Affaires in Afghanistan, to discuss the reactivation of Afghanistan’s membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the expansion of trade relations.

Kabul 24: The meeting focused on strengthening economic ties and exploring opportunities for mutual cooperation.

Abdulsalam Jawad Akhundzada, the ministry’s spokesperson, stated that the discussions covered the EU’s potential support in restoring Afghanistan’s active WTO membership, facilitating the export of Afghan goods, and fostering connections between the ministry and international exhibition organizations.

The talks also emphasized enabling Afghanistan’s private sector to actively participate in global trade fairs, which could enhance the country’s visibility in international markets. Zahed highlighted the importance of these steps in revitalizing Afghanistan’s trade capabilities and integrating its economy into the global system.

The EU representative pledged to consult with relevant colleagues on the discussed issues and share the outcomes with the ministry’s leadership.

This commitment signals a willingness to explore practical steps toward supporting Afghanistan’s reintegration into global trade frameworks.

The private sector in Afghanistan views rejoining the WTO as critical for expanding trade opportunities. Economic experts argue that restoring Afghanistan’s WTO membership could address significant challenges in import and export processes, streamline trade regulations, and boost economic growth.

Afghanistan initially gained WTO membership in 2015, but it was suspended following the Islamic Emirate’s return to power in 2021.

With over 150 member countries, the WTO plays a pivotal role in global trade governance. Reactivating Afghanistan’s membership could unlock access to international markets, attract foreign investment, and foster economic stability.

The ministry expressed optimism about the potential for deepened cooperation with the EU, which could pave the way for Afghanistan’s reintegration into the global trade system, benefiting both its economy and regional commerce.
