The spokesperson of the European Commission said that technical-level contacts between European Union officials and the Islamic Emirate are still ongoing in connection with efforts to return Afghan refugees.
Kabul 24: In a press briefing, Marcoz Lamert, responding to a question about whether a delegation from the Islamic Emirate had been invited to Brussels to discuss the deportation of Afghan nationals this summer, stated that he could not confirm the matter.
He also added that the ongoing technical contacts between the two sides do not mean that diplomatic relations between them are being resumed.
According to the spokesperson, these discussions remain focused on practical, operational coordination rather than signaling a broader political shift in the relationship. In other words, the EU views such technical engagement as separate from any decision to restore formal diplomatic ties.
This clarification is intended to address questions raised by reports and speculation about potential changes in the level and nature of interaction between the EU and Afghanistan’s de facto authorities.
The Commission emphasized that, while engagement continues on specific administrative and procedural issues related to returns, it should not be interpreted as an endorsement of renewed diplomatic relations.
Overall, the spokesperson’s remarks underline that technical discussions between the EU and the Islamic Emirate for the return of Afghan refugees are continuing; however, they are not equivalent to the resumption of diplomatic relations or a change in the political level of contact between the two sides.
